The Cutting Room
The Cutting Room’s story begins more than 160 years ago, when it first opened as Portobello Mills in 1861. Built to meet growing demand for Yorkshire-spun cloth, the mill was a fixture in Wakefield’s industrial heartland and specifically designed to be a centre of innovation.
In the post-war era, the site transitioned seamlessly into clothing production under the Wakefield Shirt Co. It is here that the Double Two brand pioneered the non-iron and detachable collar shirt, items that have become ubiquitous in the fashion and textile sectors.
In 2005, we entered The Cutting Room. Through major capital investment, we’ve ensured that the building’s long-standing traditions of manufacturing excellence and innovation continue.
We champion a programme of continuous reinvestment, marrying the site’s proud industrial heritage with today’s most advanced automation and quality management systems. Where skilled weavers once plied their trade, now the UK’s best fabricators work in high-precision CNC routing centres, dedicated welding bays and bespoke assembly workshops
The Cutting Room now stands as one of the UK’s leading hubs for the fenestration sector, upholding over a century and a half of Wakefield’s manufacturing excellence .

CO Manufacturing is proud to be a longstanding member of the Glass & Glazing Federation (GGF), the only Government-recognised authority for the industry in the UK. We’re also Secured by Design accredited, with the majority of our products meeting this police-backed safety standard.
Our door and window ranges are all manufactured to the highest of standards, complying with ISO 9001, and they also meet (and exceed) current UK Building Regulations.
